 2024 Shaffer/Jay Family Newsletter

Windy-49 I had the privilege of seeing the Eclipse as my annual trade conference was in Dallas at just the right time. I was able to attend the International Double Reed Society Conference in Flagstaff during the summer and am really enjoying playing a variety of instruments in local community groups according to what they need, tuba, cello, bassoon and baritone saxophone. My kids are doing great and I really love and admire each of them for their own strengths and interests. Gwendolyn decided to play cello so that makes 3 out of the 5 of us cellists. Sky independently decided to resume playing Euphonium (Tenor Tuba) and choose to be in the Marching band. Cordelia is amazing with grades, dance and other fun stuff! And L is just blossoming as a young adult with school, work and friendships. What beautiful well rounded people my kids are!

L (Elnorra)-19 I'm turning 20 this upcoming year and that's crazy to me. It's feels like just last year I was preparing to go back to high school after covid. I'm about halfway through my sophomore year of college at Northern Arizona University. And have now officially changed my major to History with minors in Museum Studies and Comparative Religious Studies. This year has been a wild ride. I got to visit my roommate in Hawaii and go to Disneyland this summer. Unfortunately, only two months into this school year I lost my childhood cat Midnight. It was a very hard time, but I pushed through and eventually my roommates and I adopted a new cat named Gumdrop. He's adorable, but a menace. He loves to play fetch, but he will chomp on you when you least expect it.

Cordelia-17 Hey guys! At the start of this year I was wrapping up my junior year and was deep into audition season for the new school year. I am so grateful to have auditioned into Dance Company and Hyperion (the highest musical theater class). Summer was a blast, and I was able to just hang out with my boyfriend all the time and work a ton. (Talon is my boyfriend of basically a year now.) Then senior year started up and I have been busy. But I’m doing great in school and have decided on attending SUU (Southern Utah University) in the fall of 2025. I just recently had the opportunity to go to New York with Dance Company and it was such an amazing experience. I am so grateful to all the people who have shaped me into who I am today. If you want more constant updates, follow my instagram @cordeliashaffer437.

Sky (Adelaide)-14 I'm almost 15 and I'll get my learners permit and learn how to drive I'm nervous but really excited at the same time I started marching band this summer I had so much fun I was hesitant at first to do marching band, but it was probably the best thing I did this year and I had so much fun. I’m so Glad my braces are off and I have two cats Pip and Chip.

Gwendolyn-11 I went into 6th grade so am a middle schooler now. I earned my irl Scout Bronze Award, I made it into the school play “Matilda” and I met tons of new friends. I am earning all A’s. I enjoyed taking dance over the summer and I have a dance class next semester. I love our dogs, Charlie (Brown) and Westley (black).

2023 Shaffer/Jay Family Newsletter

Windy Jay (48) 2023 has flown by. So many major changes this year. In honor of my mother I elected to change my last name to Jay. My oldest kid graduated high school and started college. My second kid is doing extremely well with theater and dance. Kid number 3 is coming into their own and doing exceptionally well both at school and with their social life. Kid number four is just my adorable little mini me and is growing up so fast! She is now in her last year of elementary school. I have four kids in four schools and no prospect of ever having two kids in the same school again.
I continue to be involved with Nebo Philharmonic Orchestra and play in at least two community bands. Last year I started playing the bassoon in orchestra and absolutely adore it, especially since I get a play next to one of my best friends, Denali Roper. I was gifted a baritone saxophone so I got to play that in the Payson City Band and still play my tuba in the Wasatch Winds Symphonic Band and my cello will get dusted off some day when there's not a bassoon part for orchestra.
I have recovered enough health that I'm at my ‘new normal’. Do I still have significant side effects and limitations and take a handful of prescription pills every morning and night. I can honestly declare that I am a survivor. This December will mark 6 years since I was diagnosed with breast cancer, my bone marrow transplant was over 3 years ago.
I try to find joy in the journey and enjoy each happy moment that comes along. This is been a year full of travel between scattering my mom's ashes in Ireland, taking my oldest on college campus tours, visiting my sister in North Carolina and visiting friends along that route. As well as attending both of my high school reunions and Southern Arizona for my niece’s wedding reception meanwhile hauling tubas back and forth to Flagstaff to work with my mentor. Loving every moment I get with family and friends. Best wishes to you and yours.

“L” Elnorra Shaffer (18) I graduated High School! Spent my summer between HS and college working, going on road trips and spending time with friends. I am currently attending Northern Arizona University (NAU) for Engineering and having a great time. I get along with my roommate, Tiana, really well. Especially considering we didn't get to meet each other before we moved in together. I have mostly A's and some B's. School has been a lot of work but I've been able to keep on top of it which I am grateful for.

Cordelia Shaffer  (16) Life is crazy busy but I wouldn’t have it any other way. School is weirdly my happy place even though Junior year has been rough. I still love drama and singing but I have found a passion for dance. I love it so much and now am on a studio’s competition team and I also teach ballet to 2-6 year olds, I love it so much and we always have a blast If you want to see continuous updates of my life throughout the year feel free to follow my instagram@cordeliashaffer_437  Overall life is good and I love the freedom of being a 16 year old girl with a car.

Sky Shaffer (aka Adelaide) (13) Hi I’m Sky and wow, I’m in 8th grade and it’s crazy to think that I’ll be in high school next year. I love my art teacher and foods class. It’s fun to learn how to make new foods and not just Mac and cheese. Hehe anyway this year has been pretty good and I can’t wait for next year to make new memories and friends.

Gwendolyn (10) I’m Gwendolyn and school has been so fun since I’m in 5th grade and so shocked that I’m going in to middle school next year. I’m in an after school choir class and I love being with my friends.

2022 Windy's Family Newsletter

Windy-47 I have had many adventures this year. I feel human again as my health is finally approaching my “New Normal.” It is such a relief to be able to drive, see a computer screen, and walk up the stairs without hoisting myself with both arms.  I can do basic household chores, yard work, real work, and play too.  Business is still doing well as I put what little energy I had into the 2 most important things: raising my family and working in the shop.  I’m so glad that I made the time this summer to visit my mom in her rental house in Port Townsend, WA (a 15 hr drive). We had a perfect visit and made fond memories. In October we traveled again to PT and said a final goodbye (see back)  My sister and I were blessed to be at her side for a perfect passing, just as she planned.  We were at her house for 49 hours between arrival and the house ready to re-rent. GO, TEAM.  On a fun note, I adopted two mini golden doodles., Westley and Charlie. They have brought lots of love and learning to my home.

L-17 This year has been chaotic.  It’s my senior year so I’ve been applying to colleges and for scholarships.  I also decided to take all the core concurrent enrollment classes I could so I have a lot of homework. Last spring break my mom, Cordelia, and I went to New York City and among other things saw “Dear Evan Hansen” and “Hades Town” on Broadway.  After NYC we went to Baltimore from my mom’s business convention where “aunt” Rebecca joined us and took me on day trips to see her favorite memories of living there and listened to audiobooks. When we visited GranDee in July we had a lovely time with her and my PT friends took me to a K-Pop concert in Seattle. I’ve been able to hang out with my friends a little bit this year and that has really helped my mental health. I enjoyed cosplaying with my family and friends at FanX.  Overall I think I’ve had a pretty okay but overwhelming year.

Cordelia-15 This year has been loads of fun. I can now drive and love it so much. My friends are cool, both old and new, and I love them.  I started high school and got my first job. I love theater, as always, and am in most of the school and class plays.  I have been privileged to travel the US quite a bit.  I hope to travel outside the US soon.  This year has been a blast!

Sky-12 It is so crazy how incredibly fast time has gone by,  It still feels like 2019! It’s insane that it’s 2022 and I’m almost 13!!! My summer was crazy when traveling to summer music came in Michigan the train was late and we had to sleep overnight in the Chicago Union Station.  We, “L”, Cordelia and I, ended up having a lovely time with mom’s friend Dawn, and her daughter, Willow, petting bunnies and seeing the sights in Chicago before the next train left 24 hours later.  After we finally arrived at our cousin Tom’s house the camp was canceled less than 24 hours before it started due to an outbreak of COVID.  So we flew home early. I did enjoy the two camps I did attend I love the memories I have of GranDee, I hope she is not forgotten, I miss her.  The new puppies are so cute!

Gwendolyn-9 I am now in fourth grade and love gymnastics, math, friends, family, and new puppies as well as our two pet rats, and two cats. I finally have my own phone number!

Charle is brown and more poodle than his brother, and Westley is black and more retriever. They have brought us so much love and joy!

Happy Holidays from our family to yours.

DD Jay (aka Diane Lea Draper, DD Johnson, DeeDee Draper Jay) lived with a joyful attitude, laughing as she stumbled onto the next new adventure in her 77 years (a number that is both a palindrome and multiple of two primes). She passed peacefully, painlessly, and punctiliously in her own home in Port Townsend, Washington on October 3rd, 2022 with her two daughters holding her hands.

Born to Ellen (Robertson) and Woodrow “Scrub” Draper on January 24th, 1945, she has brought laughter and depth to a number of lives everywhere she has lived. In Boulder, Colorado as a 5th grader, she worked in her father's restaurant (College Catering, which notably served the first pizza in Boulder) answering the phone, filling orders, and making brownies while also tending to her two younger siblings. She was always an amazing friend and remained in contact with many of her friends from Junior High, High School, CU Buffs, and beyond. In 1976 she moved to Flagstaff, Arizona where she was a middle school math teacher by day and theater extraordinaire by night. She co-founded Magic Curtain Productions (the local children’s theater). She was often found making paper mache into amazingly convincing food props or knitting on stage as an extra in Theatrikos plays. Her true love was improv and Fox Paws (Faux Pas) was the name she picked for her troupe that always had a good laugh and created dinner theaters from scratch in both Northern and Southern Arizona (Green Valley).

She lived an amazing and helpful life and is well-loved by all that knew her including her children and grandchildren who are grateful for all the care she gave them. She loved to cook and cater and fed many a group of family, friends, theater groups, UUs, and film crews, often with homemade pizza.

Her community advocacy was put to good use as she was highly involved in working with Habitat for Humanity, politics, and peaceful conflict resolution as well as making sure that everyone's voice was heard through protests and rallies. After retirement, she moved to Green Valley, Arizona in 2006. She was adamant that all humans have the right to live safely without prejudice and hate. She has donated her body to science as she continues to give even in her death.

She is survived by the two children she raised, Emily Johnson James (Rod), and their two children Tyler and Kelsey. Windy (Johnson, Shaffer) Jay and her four children, Elnorra “L”, Cordelia, Adelaide “Sky” and Gwendolyn, and the beloved child she adopted away in 1965, Dan Cortes (Karen) and his four children Veronica “Roni”, Nate, Zane, and Zoe as well as the father of her children and good friend, her ex-husband Ken Johnson (Lorie), her brother Dennis Draper and sisters Alfred McElwain (Marty) and Dixie Llewellin (Dave).

It was her desire that in lieu of a formal memorial you each take a few minutes to remember her fondly with a Pepperidge Farms Milano cookie and a cup of tea at your convenience. If you would like to contribute to a memory book please send a message with your memory to her daughters. Contributions can be made in her name to the charity you had in common with her; Habitat for Humanity or by donating books to help children’s literacy.
